Yuval Harari: A.I. Threatens Democracy
What's going on here?
Historian Yuval Noah Harari warns that AI-powered chatbots could threaten democracy by competing for human intimacy and manipulating our emotions.
What does this mean?
Harari argues that democracy fundamentally relies on large-scale conversations, which have been enabled by modern information technologies like newspapers and radio. However, the rise of social media algorithms and now generative AI is disrupting our ability to engage in productive democratic discourse. He suggests that AI chatbots, capable of engaging in intimate conversations and pretending to be human, represent a new frontier in the battle for our attention and emotional engagement.
Why should I care?
If AI systems become primary sources of emotional support and information for many people, it could reshape how we form opinions and make decisions as citizens. There's a risk that these AI systems could be optimized to keep us engaged by appealing to our fears and biases, rather than helping us understand complex issues. Even without a nefarious agenda, AI greatly increases the rate of content creation, which also increases the output of things like advertising, podcasts, blog posts, etc. all mediums that shape collective opinion.
